I put together this Do Larson Doors Suck ? website on June 06, 2006 because.............
I've now owned two (2) Larson doors at two (2) different homes and both LARSON STORM DOORS have given me problems.
I ask, do: "Larson Storm Doors
Suck!"?
Here's my open letter to the world.
My tale of woe!
In 1990 I built my Executive Equine
Estate
in Athens, TN.
A few years later I was at the local Lowe's store and saw a Larson storm door with a window that raised and left a screen. I also saw the LIFETIME WARRANTY, so I bought it.

I installed the Larson storm
door at the exterior door from my Master Bedroom that went out on a private
deck.
A few years later I noticed there was a
bubble on the interior surface of the door.
Soon more bubbles were showing up.
The condition of the Larson storm door
gradually got worse.
The aluminum skin started flaking off.! (It was like it had door-cancer
!?!?!?)
There is no steel in the door, so it couldn't have been rust.

(Note the arrow pointing
to 2 defective areas)

Close-up of my defective Larson storm
door.
What did I do?
I emailed Larson with the information as well as images of my DEFECTIVE LARSON
STORM DOOR.
So, why do Larson doors suck, you ask?
Well, even though there are LIFETIME WARRANTY stickers, Larson Doors refused to replace my door at no charge!
They would only authorize Lowe's to sell me a new door for half price!
Taking down the defective Larson storm door left screw holes in the door jamb,
so I paid $70, plus tax, for another stinking Larson storm door.
That is the end of it, you say? WRONG!
In late 2003 I sold my estate with the Larson door

and bought a new house in Sweetwater TN.
(note there is no Larson storm door)
My parents are great and they gave me a
new storm door for the entrance door area of my new house.
[Yeppers! It was a dang Larson storm door.]

I didn't want to hurt my parents' feelings, so I installed it in the Spring of 2005.
A few days ago, the Larson storm door would not automatically close completely.
(It wouldn't latch unless you pulled it closed.)
It appeared the seal on the bottom was
dragging, so I adjusted the bottom trim up so that it wouldn't drag so much.
The Larson storm door would close completely only about 1 in 10 tests, so I
adjusted the closers.
The door then seemed to close completely automatically more often than not after
those adjustments.
THEN on 07-04-2005,
The 4th of JULY, the Larson storm door wouldn't even close unless I turned the
handle a little. The latch bolt just banged against the striker plate and would
not compress to allow the door to even close unless I manually turned the door
handle. I then inspected the door and and my Larson storm door seems to have
sagged! This sagging of my Larson storm door appears to cause the side of the
door that's opposite the hinges to now be too close to the jamb. (It's actually
touching at the top of the left side.)
If you look at the top of the hinge side, you'll see there's now a big gap at
the top and not at the bottom.

Note the gap at the top of the hinge side of my sagging Larson
door.
(the gap narrows as you go down the door)

Latch side of my sagging Larson storm door.
(Note the Larson door is touching on the side near the top and the gap widens as
it goes down)

See how the latch on my Larson door won't close because the door has sagged.
Larson kept arguing with me that is the door frame and not the hinge area.
I contacted Larson and they sent a new frame. (It arrived bent!)
My remedy: I have to put white grease on the striker plate periodically so the dang thing will close.
(BUT, It will not close by itself if the main door is closed. I guess it can't overcome the compression it creates.)
NOTE: This door probably isn't used 4 times a week, so over-use cannot be the culprit.
Has anyone else had this problem with Larson storm doors?
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you,
Phil Lea

My email to Larson on their website feature sent 07-15-2005:
(I'll keep you posted as to what they say.)
Dear Sirs,
Back in 2001 I had a Larson door and the skin "rotted" away. I contacted you and your "Lifetime Guarantee" wouldn't replace it unless I paid half price. I
begrudgingly paid $70 more + tax for a replacement door.
Several months ago I sold the home it was on and bought a new house.
A few months ago my parents gave me a new Larson storm door for the entrance door area of my new house. I was wary of your products, but I didn't want to hurt their feelings so I installed it.
A few days ago, the Larson storm door would not automatically close completely. (It wouldn't latch unless you pulled it closed.)
The seal on the bottom was dragging, so I adjusted the bottom trim up as far as the slots would allow, but it still would drag and the door would close completely only about 1 in 10 tests, so I adjusted the hydraulic closers.
The door then seemed to close completely more often than not after those adjustments, but you have to run in the door or it would hit you in the back.
On 07-04-2005, the 4th of JULY, the Larson storm door wouldn't even close. The latch bolt just bangs against the striker plate and won't compress to allow the door to even close unless I manually turn the door handle. I then inspected the door and and my Larson storm door seems to have sagged! This sagging of my Larson storm door appears to cause the side of the door that's opposite the hinges to now be too close to the jamb. (It's actually touching at the top of the left side.)
If you look at the top of the hinge side, you'll see the gap at the top of the door is wider that the at the bottom.
The "storm" door is under a 10' porch, so it hasn't experienced any "storms".
I'm a single guy, so the door is not worn out from tons of traffic.
I usually enter my home through the garage, so this door is rarely used.
What are your intentions on my defective Larson door?
Sincerely,
Phil Lea

Hello,
After reviewing the information regarding your Larson storm door, a
replacement core (minus the glass/screen inserts, hardware, zbars and
expander) has been approved. We will then FEDEX the core to your home
and your replacement should arrive in approximately three to five weeks.
Please provide a physical shipping address and a daytime phone number so we
may continue.
Do not dismantle your current door until the replacement core arrives
as you need to use some of the original parts. Special instructions will guide
you through the transfer. If the product should arrive damaged, refuse the
shipment and contact us within five business days at 1-800-334-1328 or
www.larsondoors.com for assistance with Reference Number: 276081. Once
you have changed your core, please dispose of it locally. Do not take it to
a store.
We apologize for any inconvenience you've experienced. We take pride
that we have earned our No. 1 rating in the industry by building the best storm
door and by listening to you, our customer. We are sure this replacement
will solve your concern.
Thank you for choosing a Larson product for your home.

I don't think a door alone will correct the problem, so I replied with this email on 07-19-2005:

Hello Kevin,
Thank you for your prompt reply.
Are you sure that a core door only replacement will fix the problem???
I would think the hinge frame may be the biggest culprit.
(Don't you think we might try a new hinge assembly before replacing the door!?!?!)
The gap on the hinge side (wider at the top) is what makes me think that.
What do you think???
[I'll attach more pics here for your scrutiny.]
