My "BIG BOY TOYS"

Christmas 1965, I was 13 and Dad got me a
Deluxe Allstate Moped (by Puch)
It had rear shocks, speedometer and a chrome luggage rack with a spring loaded "lid" to hold items.
It even had a tool compartment on the top of the gas tank.
It was a 2-cycle and had a mixing gauge inside the gas cap!
I think he ordered from Sears and drove to Atlanta to pick it up. (I think it cost $189.00!)

Many times I would ride it up to Steve Harbison's house, he would grab a boat cushion off his Game Warden dad's boat, toss it on the luggage rack and here we'd go. It eventually damaged the spring on the rack. Steve Burgess got one a few months later (it didn't have rear shock, speedo or a luggage rack) and we went everywhere trying to see how many miles we could log each day as well as explore roads we had never been on before.

A couple of years later dad traded my Mo-ped to Wayne Woody on 05/07/1966 for this 1965 Honda Dream
Mfr's. Identification Number: CA95-5005520
Man! This thing was nice! (I kept scars on the inside of my legs from exhaust pipe burns, though.)

I can't remember what happened to it!?!?!? (Why would I still have the title???)

Tennessee Title Number: 11241925
Issue Date: June 1, 1966
My first tag number: ZE-1714

My 3/25/67 Tag Receipt (Dad always got these for me on my birthday)
Tag Number: ZE-6008
(Has I. J. Wright's name)

My 4/2/68 Tag Receipt
Tag Number: ZF-1485

My Craftsman riding lawn mower
(I won it around 1967 Sears when they had a grand opening give-a-way across Keith Street.)

My 1967 Camaro

My mom & dad bought it new at Hall Chevrolet in Cleveland TN
from the factory it was a 327/210 with Powerglide, console and floor shift.
I souped it up. I first put an aluminum intake and Holley 4-bbl, then headers, then a 350/350 hydraulic factory cam and double-hump heads with 1.50 valves (300 hp).
If you rolled it off about 20 or so, it would fly. But, it wouldn't take off well.
I bought a junk-yard 350 Turbo tranny and it helped some. I put in a shift-kit later.
I found a wrecked '69 Z-28 at East Side Auto Parts in Dalton and bought the rear-end out of it.
When I pulled the factory 10-bolt out, I discovered it was a 2.73 ! Then, I discovered the 12-bolt was a 4.10.
That 4.10 helped my performance more than any 1-thing I did.
THEN, I ordered a new LT-1 short-block from Berger Chevrolet for $371.00
I added LT-1 heads, Z28 "off road" cam, Edelbrock Tarantula intake, Holley 3310 780 4-barrel, dual-point dist

My 1967 Camaro (circa 1971) Bolero Red (I had chrome reverse wheels then!)

Going to the Bradley Prom in my 1967 Camaro (circa 1973)
I had the LT-1 in it then.
(Note the Edelbrock "Tarantula" & Holley stickers in the back glass and my American Racing wheels.)

My 1967 Camaro

The Camaro came with a 327 / 210, Powerglide (slip-a-glide I called it) and an open 2:73 10-bolt.
Of course I had to "soup it up".
First I put some chrome reverse wheels on it and white-lettered Goodyear "Wide-Ovals"!
Next I bought a Mallory dual-point and a Sun tachometer

from Honest Charley's. (I loved just reading their catalogs.)
Then I bought some used 327/300 double-hump heads, a new Edelbrock Scorpion aluminum intake,
a new Holley "3310" 750 and a Chevy 327/350 hydraulic cam.
Then I put some headers and Thrush mufflers on it.
"Rolling it off" about 20 MPH, it was fast! But, it just wouldn't take off from a stop like it should.
I remember once getting beside Fat Cat Larry Bolen driving Junior Linderman's maroon SS-396 Chevelle at the red-light at Inman and Keith Street on a Sunday afternoon around 1970. We were headed South and when the light turned green we just rolled off. We were looking at each other, knowing what was gonna happen........... Lucky for me at about 20 mph, we both hit it. I pulled the big-block about a car length out through there. People were out at the Village and the Burger Chef. It was a big thrill to win that one. IF the thing would ever take off, it would go. I still thought it was the engine, so in 1971 I ordered a new LT-1, 350/370 short block from Berger Chevrolet for $373.00!!!! (wish I had a barn full now at that price.) While I was waiting on the LT-1, I found a wrecked '69 Z-28 at East Side Auto Parts in Dalton GA. (Remember when you could find neat stuff in a junk yard?) I crawled under the Camaro and saw the tell-tale plastic tag on the filler plug that told me it was a POSI! I asked the guy how much and when he said $75, I just paid him. It fit in the trunk of my Camaro, so I took it to my buddy's, Gary Thompson. The Z was hit in the side and when we rotated it, one axle wobbled. Gary had a Chevelle 12 bolt and gave me an axle out of it. I'd never fooled with a rear-end (heck, all this was trial by fire for me)! We replaced the axle and didn't even put new seals in it. It fit perfectly. I counted the teeth and it had 10 on the pinion and 41 on the ring gear. Dang! I had a 4:10 !!!!! I was in heaven. The Z had multi-leaf and mine had single, so I had to "fabricate" a spacer and it worked great. Man! That rear-end made all the difference in the world. That baby would FLY! (I later installed the LT-1 and it was bad, but I learned that if you have 1,000 HP and it's not geared right, it doesn't matter. Somewhere in there I put Lakewood traction bars on it, too. I would "drop the headers" by crawling under and removing 3 bolts on each collector and tossing the mufflers in the trunk if it was a money run. I was never beat on the street after I put the 4:10 in and I toasted some hot cars.

I beat my cousin, Dean Adams, about a fender in his '68 Camaro with a 427 and a 4:10 posi rear-end.
I beat Dennis Sipe in his '66 GTO with 4.56 gears and slicks.
I smoked a factory '69 Boss 429 Mustang about 10 car lengths.
[It looked like you'd dropped that engine in from 20 feet. That engine compartment was FULL, even the shock towers were moved out!]
Those were the two biggest upset wins I had, I guess.

I also beat Jerry Richardson's '66 390 Fairlane.
Gut's '55 Ford with a 351,
'57 Chevys, a '70 Mach One, '55 Chevy at the twin bridges at Old Fort, '69 Z28 at Fairmount GA,
Louie Fee's '57 Chevrolet,
Gary "Hub" Thompson's '68 350 Camaro (Hub was chased by the State and ran from them, till his fan belt came off.)
Zane Ferguson from Athens, Cobra Jet Torino,
Harley Sportster,
more big-block Fords, etc........

I always wanted to run a Mopar in Cleveland, SING A SONG OF SIX PACK, but never did get to.

Does anyone remember the back row of the StarVue Drive-In Theater?

(see the Star Vue Drive-in in the background of this pic.)
(My cousin, John Lea, used to work security there and draw the bingo numbers on Saturday nights.)
[Did anyone ever drive in the EXIT to keep from paying?]

On, or about, 1973 I sold it to
Steve "FLASH" Bennett of Cleveland.
I asked him about buying it back a few years later, but he said he didn't know what happened to it????
(I've not seen him in over 20 years.)

If you see this man, ask him where my Camaro is! (ha)

This is the only pic I've found so far of my 1968 Camaro.
It was taken before I started working on it.

My 1970 Corvette Convertible.
Matching number 454 with removable hardtop.
I purchased in around 1977 for $3,000 from ??? in Cleveland TN.

I sold in around '88 or '89 to build my house.

1971 Chevrolet Vega Panel Express / Vega panel wagon

I don't remember where I got this thing. It was white and plain-Jane inside.
The metal panels in the back amplified each little road noise.

(stock photo)

1972 Chevrolet Vega GT

I bought this from Karen Fetzer or her mom (or was if from Joe Fetzer?) The engine was in bad shape.

Dad and I wanted to put an "Iron Duke" in it, but we couldn't find one so we rebuilt the engine. (bad move). It still used oil.

I wished a 1,000 times we had put a small-block in it.

(stock photo)
1972 Yamaha 360 Enduro

Every pair of pants I owned were ripped on the right, inside leg from the monster 1-cylinder kicking me.
But, it would go anywhere and climb anything.
I loved the compression release. It would let you creep down the steepest hills.

My Exiss slant-load 2-horse goose-neck trailer with white skin
It was a nice rig.
It had rear tack and a small dressing area that made a neat camper.
It was narrow and that made it a breeze to navigate.

My steel, slant-load 2-horse bumper-pull trailer
It was a neat rig, but it was steel and steel rusts.
I had it custom-made in Savannah GA and the idiots got the axles out of linement.

My 1996 Featherlite slant-load 2-horse bumper-pull trailer
I didn't like it. I bought it new around 1997 from Fox in Clinton TN
It was a slant / stock, thoroughbred (7' ceiling) combo trailer.
It had a flat nose and was like pulling a sail down then road.
Dad and I took it to NY to get a mare. My truck would only run 65 mph and only got 6 mpg!

Floorplan

My car-hauler trailer
It was a nice rig with a dove tail, solid floor and disappearing ramps.
I had it custom-made in N. GA and had them put extra supports underneath where the car tires would roll. (prevent sagging)
I traded it in on my Harley in '95
