FRONTIER CABIN
Big Enough for 2-3 Kids
$1.00 plus 25¢ postage and handling

This was a big rip-off by GIANT CABIN CO. of NY
(Maybe they're burning in Hell about now for ripping off us little kids.)
I ordered this "cabin" and it was nothing but thin, stinky plastic that arrived in an envelope!!!
My Dad built a wooden frame for it in the yard and you draped the plastic over the frame.
(I think it was designed to drape over a card table, but we never owned a card table.)

Every once in a while, I'll be around some plastic that has that same odd smell this plastic did.

You would cut 'em out and wear 'em!

My Murray Tricycle

WANTED:

(stock photos found online)

WANTED:

"THE CHIEF" Fire truck Playset

It came with: Hook and Ladder Truck, Pumper Truck, Emergency Lantern, Unbreakable Helmet, Sixteen (16) Firemen and accessories for the firemen.

I think the lantern was battery powered.
The pieces were plastic and the fire trucks must not have held up well to normal play! (lol)

WANTED:

(stock photos found online)

Pics of Nellie Belle (the jeep), Bullit, Pat Brady and Trigger's Trailer that I found on the internet.
I think I still have the trailer, but Trigger underwent surgery with an X-acto knife and didn't survive.
(I also think Pat lost his fingers to my teeth for some reason.)
I have no idea what happened to Roy Rogers or Bullit !?!?!?
When you rolled the Nelliebelle, the hood went up and down.
(I think my jeep and its tires were different colors.)

Roy Rogers Stagecoach
I remember having one of these toys. It had all those packages and trunks.
It also had a cover (that's missing on this one) over the rear compartment.

Colored Pipe Cleaners

Oscar Mayer Weiner Whistle

Floating Ball
(You blew into a straw that had a 90° on the end and it made a small, lightweight ball float.)
(There may have been a plastic cage around the ball???)

Ping Pong Ball Gun

(It was red rubber. You popped a ping pong ball in the end of the barrel and squeezed the handle quickly to propel it out.)
pingpongball gun, pingpong ball gun

Rubber Stamps
(I think the ones I had were Snap, Crackle & Pop cereal premiums)

ANIMAL RUMMY Children's Playing Cards

(stock photos found online)

Auburn No. 2 Rubber Hotrod

Balancing Toy

You would put it on a string, lower one end of the string and it would go (peddle?) downhill.

Was it a Monkey or Clown???

Moo Can / Moo Cow toy

[It was a little bigger than a snuff can and when you turned it over it would "Moooooooooo"]

(Here's a modern, china, knock-off version) (I think the originals from the 50s & 60s had a metal top)

Etch-a-Sketch

"Drop the clothes pins in the Mason jar" game
(Homemade toy at Grandma's)

ABC Blocks

Photos Wanted drwebman.com
A small, toy merry-go-round / carousel that had mirrors in the inside

Photos Wanted drwebman.com
Wind-up Horse.
(I think it was tin!?!?!?)

It would hop around.

(stock photo found online)

Wind-up sea plane.

I was tin when you wound it up the propeller would make it move across the water.

Cox Navy plane with 049 engine
I think it was a "Hurricane Hell-diver"
(Mine never did fly. I think it was too heavy for the engine.)

ViewMaster / View Master

WANTED: A box for my...
The Thing Bank from the Addams Family TV show

 The Thing
Battery Operated Bank from the Addams Family Television Show
copyright 1964 Filmways TV Productions. Made in Japan.

Simple hard plastic box with a Battery operated device. Coin is placed in the slot and the lid of the box slowly moves up( just like in the show) and out appears a green THING hand which grabs the awaiting money and stashes it inside the bank. Then the box closes, thing goes back into hiding... until another coin is place there.

NOTE: I still have mine, but no box.
I would like a box like the one pictured above.

(stock photo found online)
Candy Cigarettes

SLOT CARS

(stock photos found online)

1/32 Slot Cars (I don't think they were 1/24 slot cars)
I had a small set and found a bunch of track cheap at .....

RAILROAD SALVAGE on South Lee Highway in Cleveland.

Charles Harbison and another man opened a slot car track in Benton we used to go to.
A BIG track opened up in Cleveland next to C.C. Card Ford dealership. It had HUGE banked curves.
They charged you hour (or 1/4 hour)? to run your cars. (I won a trophy there once.)

Does anyone else remember TIRE DRESSING?

Remember the old Cox controllers and how HOT they would get?

I later got one that was tall and had cooling fins on the bottom.

(above is a crude Paint drawing I did that sorta shows what it looked like.)

(The fins may have been vertical, though!?!?)

Photos Wanted drwebman.com

Helicopter? Toy

(you pulled a string? and it flew up in the air)

Play Fort

(I ordered it off the back of a funny book. The photo made it look like a neat fort, but when it arrived it was only thin plastic/vinyl. Dad had to build a frame out of 2x4's and then draped the "fort" over it. It was kinda neat, but didn't stand the weather too well. It had a stinky plastic odor, too.)

Fort ordered off a comic book, comic book ad play fort, cheap plastic, thin plastic, vinyl, order form off a comic book

Rook card game

(stock photo found online)
SLINKY

CHEIN DIME BANK
"Registers Ten Dollars"

Little Metal Dime Bank that kept a total amount of coins you put in it.
It was shiny silver and trimmed in blue and red.
You put the dime in, moved the slider and it kept a tally of how much was in your bank.
It locked at the first dime and wouldn't open until you reached $10.00.

Here is a nice example of one with the box
I found online

Here's another one that shows $1.90

NOTE: I won this one on ebay!

(stock photo found online)

Duncan Imperial Top
New Snap-Top * The Imperial of all Tops!

(stock photo found online)

I also had some wooden ones.

(stock photos found online)

Duncan Yo-Yo
I had several growing up. Some were painted wood and I think the Duncan Imperial Yo-Yo's were colored plastic.

HOP CHING Chinese Checkers
(A fiber board with a wooden frame.)

Marbles

I would take my taw (shooter) to school and say Stick me for my taw., someone would then put in a marble for me.
When the game was over, I would give him a marble back.
If I didn't have one to give, he got my taw.
(Note: We called a taw the marble we shot with, the shooter.)

David Burris and I were probably the two best marble players at Benton Elementary School of the 50's & 60's.
[I would usually come home with both front pockets bulging with marbles and the knees of my pant worn out.]

A Rayline / Ray Line Rifle

UPDATE: It might have been a knockoff of "Wanted Dead or Alive" Josh Randall (Steve McQueen) Mare's Led Sawed-off Rifle

1892 Winchester Mares Laig, Hogleg, Hog leg

Called "The Pursurer"

I had a rifle that shot plastic bullets.

I thought it might have been a "The Rifleman" rifle, but the ones I've found on eBay

are not like it at all. (Maybe it was a knock-off or some other Western show!?!?!?

It was NOT a cap rifle. It shot soft, plastic bullets. It seems they had a small hole in the front and the back
was open. They may have been the size of a 38. I think they were launched
with a spring when you cocked the rifle. (You may could load more than one at a time,
but I'm not sure.) My buddies and I probably tore it up and it was tossed.

You loaded the bullets by pressing them in the chamber (against a spring) and held them in while rotating the chamber.

It fired when the chamber turned so that a shell lined up with the barrel.

A nice fellow told me he thinks this was a Ray Line (or Rayline) Rifle. He said they even made some Rifleman "ring" knock-offs, so that may be it.

Here's a crude Paint drawing I created to show what the plastic bullet looked like. (kinda/sorta)
It was about the size of a 38 shell, lightweight, thin wall, the nose was tapered and it was probably flesh colored.

I remember it was a toy that dropped bombs.
You held it and looked down through a "sight" and released a bomb at your target of choice.
It was gray and red plastic.
It came with a play mat that looked like the sea for the boat targets.
There were ship targets that flew apart when hit.
(I think the targets were held together by rubber bands.)
Automatic Bombsight 01
(pics I found online of one exactly like I had)

(pics I found online of one exactly like I had)

Remember them?
You could put them under a light and they would click and bounce around.

They were hard rubber or plastic and only about 2" long.
(They were so small that they didn't have props, but they were pretty well detailed.)

(They probably came in a bag from Woolworth's or were a cereal premium.)
They may have been MPC and/or LIDO airplanes.

6" Marx WWII Soldiers
I had green Army, yellow Japs (I remember when you could say that) & gray Germans.

I think I would buy them at Woolworth's in Cleveland TN with my allowance. (Maybe 10 cents each??)

ZOOMERANG ???

(stock photo found in my Sears Toy Book)
Sears number 49N 5113
It was an odd toy.

I remember it was plastic and had big feet. You pushed down on its head
and the head would  shoot up in the air still attached with some kind of rolled-up paper device.

(The toy's "neck" was on the same principle as a paper Chinese Yo Yo that you flip out and they fly back)

May have been Pops and Lolli-Pops

(stock photo found online)

(You could move the weight on the nose around and affect it's flight.)

SPINNING TOP

Thanks to Jonathan Manski,
the "Toy Top Guy".
He was kind enough to send me this photo of a Chein Spinning Top. The white ring on mine looks VERY close to the music pattern on this one.

Tickle Bee Game

OVER-N-UNDER GAME

I had a game that was like a little pinball. It had a tin bottom and a plastic cover that kept the balls from flying away. You flipped the balls and they landed in different parts for different scores. It was something cheap, I'm sure. I don't have any idea of the name. (I probably had it in the late 50s or early 60s) It was similar to the "Under-N'-Over" or "Boomerang" games.

(stock photos found online)

Remember the Water Rockets?
You'd put some water in it, turn it over, pump it up, pull the trigger and it would fly up in the air (spraying you with water).

Dealer Promo Cars

(Remember these? They gave them away at the dealerships.)
I had some that came from C.C. Card Ford and Hall Chevrolet in Cleveland Tenn.

(I remember they had four screws in the bottom that held them together.)

Here are a few of the pieces I have left.

It was an OPERATION X 500 space playset, made by the DELUXE READING company.

WANT TO BUY:

I remember playing with all the knobs on the console on mine.

My Mickey Mouse Halloween Costume
Halloween 1957
This story sounds like a lie, but it is true. (You can ask my daddy!)

It was Halloween 1957 and I was 5 years old. I had my Mickey Mouth outfit on. (I can almost still smell that funky smell that those 'ol plastic masks got when you breathed in them for a while.) My dad and "uncle" Bud Simerly took me trick-or-treating to a black family's house who lived across the street. It was dark and as I walked up to the door I could hear the kids inside. They were playing loud, running and really whooping it up. I had to knock on the door several times before they finally heard me. When the did it got real quiet and I could hear "what's at?, what's at?" from the kids inside. Finally the doorknob turned, the door creaked open a crack and a boy about my age peered out. As soon as he saw me I said: "TRICK OR TREAT!". You would've thought the devil himself had come to the door. He slung that door wide open, his eyes got big, he screamed to the top of his lungs and ran out of sight. In a moment another little kid ran up to the open door, saw me, screamed, jumped up in the air and ran off. That scene repeated 3 or 4 times. It wasn't funny to me at the time. (I was looking for candy!) But, dad and Bud were rolling in the yard, laughing their *sses off! Finally their momma came to the door. She looked just like Aunt Jemima! She was a large woman and had on a big 'ol skirt. Those kids were actually "hiding behind her dress-tail". The would peek out and then hide their face in her skirt, scared to death. It was just like those scenes you used to see on TV or the movies in the 50's and 60's when black folks would get scared. (Before it was no longer "PC" to show such humor.) When she came to the door I said: "TRICK OR TREAT" again. She said: "I don't have anything to give you." I was only 5 years old, but it made me feel bad.

I hesitated putting this story on here, fearing it might offend someone.
But, it is the truth and they'll just have to get over it if the truth offends them.
If it had been filmed, it would be worth a million dollars!
