DIXIE FOUNDRY - promotional
skillet S. B. Rymer Sr. was a native of Polk
County. In 1916 he established Dixie Foundry Company. It initially
produced cast-iron holloware used for corn stick molds, fireplace grates
and frames, sugar pots, and teapots. In 1921 the company began to make
coal and wood ranges for the kitchen; thereafter, ranges of different
sorts have been the company's main items. In 1924 production expanded to
coal and wood heaters. Gas ranges came off the company's lines in 1928,
and in 1952 Dixie Foundry produced its first electric ranges. |

He stomped up, glared down at us and gruffly asked "CAN I HELP YOU!?" (more a demand than question) We gave the standard answer: "No thanks, we're just looking." He then yelled: "IF YOU'RE NOT GONNA BUY ANYTHING, GET OUTTA HERE!" (We skedaddled.) The store became OTASCO somewhere around 1971 |

To follow are some photos of old downtown Cleveland Tennessee

Speck Hospital
Inman Street in Cleveland TN
(Where I was born)
Dr. Arnold delivered me.
Dr. Sullivan was supposed to deliver me, but went to a rehearsal dinner for his
daughter's wedding.
He had delivered my mom, my aunt Sadie and uncle Danny.
My grandmother got mad at him because he "ran off" and didn't deliver me.
Mom said he peeked his head in the next morning and sheepishly asked: "Is Granny
here?
Mom said they brought a baby girl in to her and she said: "THAT'S NOT MY BABY!"
(Does anyone know the name of this girl who was born on or about March 27,
1952???)
Morris McClary was born 3 days before me and he has always said they tried to
switch me and him once.
(My pediatrician was Dr. Appling.)
Speck Hospital was established by Dr. Carl T. Speck
Bradley County's first general hospital

He was the Fonzie of Cleveland (before there was a Fonzie!)

(circa Easter 1965)
NOTE: Does anyone remember the little firecracker stand that was just across the road from their walk? (It was just North of the North-South Truck Stop and right on the side of the road.) It wasn't much bigger than an outhouse and people had to walk up to alittle window on the side. One night my Grandma said it caught on fire and blew up. She said she was afraid it was going to burn their house down. (I'll bet it was a show!)
NOTE: Does anyone remember the people who raised Chinchillas just North of my grandparents on South Lee Hwy? (I remember going there and petting them.)

My Mom, Glenda Tinsley Lea

Lion Mauls Child Cleveland Tennessee.
Scene Tragique Dans Un Theatre
Un lien appriviese saute sur le public et emporte un enfant
[ Un lien apprivoise saute sur le public et emporte un enfant
]
Supposedly this is a photo of an original print from the Le Petit Journal
showing a lion mauling a small child at a theater performance at Cleveland, Tennessee
in 1910.
[Reportedly the Le Petit Journal was one of the most widely circulated news journals in the late 1800s and early 1900s.]
I just came across this pic on the internet, but cannot find any information about it!?!?
It appears the lion leapt off the stage, snatched a child from
the arms of its mother (see lady reaching)
and climbed across the orchestra back on the stage.
Does anyone have any information on this incident????

A little about me, the Webmaster and my relationship with Cleveland:

I was born in Speck Hospital in
Cleveland in March, 1952.
(Mom said the nurse later brought in a girl baby to
her and she said: "THAT'S NOT MY BABY!", so they found me somewhere
and brought me in.)

I grew up in the Benton Station Community of Polk County, but Cleveland was "town" to us.
I remember.......
going to the Princess Theater while mom shopped.

[Bob Brandy sometimes hosted Westerns there on Saturdays.]

How about NURSE BADBODY?

Does anyone remember
"Bones"??
What was his name?
Is he still alive???
Does anyone remember the times the Cherokee HOTEL
sign on top would only have the HOT letters
lit-up???
(We always thought that mean something.)

F. W. Woolworth's on Ocoee Street in
the 1950's
(I can still see the toys in the bins there.)
(Once I got some "bubbles" there, went outside and started blowing
them. Those bubbles floated up and down Ocoee Street for a couple of hours!!)
I also remember walking around the stone wall at the church across the street from Woolworth's.
I remember getting my shoes at Appler's Shoe Store.

(I always wanted Poll Parrot because they offered a toy.) (I think I got a
clicker once.)
When I was about 15 my best buddy, Steve Burgess, was 16 and had his license.
We cruised Cleveland most every Friday
night, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon
![]()
in his family's '62 Ford.
THEN, I got MY license at 16 in 1968 and then I could
cruise in Mom & Dad's

1967 Camaro
They traded in their '55 Ford at Hall Chevrolet for this Camaro. (It listed
for $3,071.00)
We would stay out until 2:00 AM sometimes, but it was all innocent back then.
We didn't drink or even smoke. We were just cruising to meet GIRLS (and later
on, get up races AND meet girls)!
This pic taken of the Webmaster in 1971 (the lanky years!)

We circled the Village,

around the "Mud Hole" at the Sugar 'n Spice

around the Dairy Kreme (formerly The Little Pig)
and back up to the Village.
![]()
The only radio station I listened to was "Jet Fli, WFLI" AM with Tommy
Jet.
"And, on we go with the musical show and down
beat, beat, beat, beat, beat....."

(Does anyone remember the Sugar & Spice
Drive-in restaurant jingle on WFLI?)
| (Sung to the tune of Turkey in the Straw) "I'm going to the Sugar, to the Sugar & Spice. It's up in Cleveland Tennessee. Where the service is good and the ( food?) is best. Come go with me to the Sugar and Spice." and, a spoken commercial: "Say man. Do you have a Sugar & Spice barbeque sandwich in your mouth??" "What?" "Do you have a Sugar & Spice barbeque sandwich in your mouth??" "What?" "Do you have a Sugar & Spice barbeque sandwich in your mouth??" "I can't hear you, man! I've got a Sugar & Spice barbeque sandwich in my mouth!" |
Cleveland had lots of cute girls back then.

Does anyone remember the back row of the Star Vue Drive-In Theater?
(My first cousin, John Lea, used to work security there and draw the bingo
numbers on Saturday nights.)
[Did anyone ever back in the EXIT to keep from paying? How about putting your
friends in the trunk??]
In 1968 I got my first real job, bagging
groceries at....
MC Headrick Super Market
on Keith Street, across from the
Village
"Where prices are born and raised elsewhere"
I worked with John Paul Douglas, Pee Wee Ingle," Scrooge" Headrick, Rusty
Everett, Steve Hixon, and ????
We kept the Burger Chef in business, I think
I worked there about a year.
I
graduated from Polk County in 1970 and that Summer I got a job at
Magic Chef as
an "Assembler" in the "gas line".
(I worked there one lonnnng day and told them I wouldn't be back.)

So, I got a 3rd shift job at DUPLAN CORPORATION.
Jerry Richardson and I worked there as "material handlers" and someone really messed-up one time. They processed yarn that were used in panty hose and only told us to keep the operators supplied with the same yarn they were using. The spools were different colors and if they were using purple. red. blue, yellow, etc..., we got them more of the same color when they ran low. After we had worked there about a month, our boss called us into the office and held up some panty hose that had one dark leg and one light leg. He said that mistake cost the company about $1,500. (Oops!)
In the Fall of 1970 I enrolled at Cleveland State Community College in the Architecture program. After that I learned it would only transfer to Memphis State. Then, I started getting profs that tried to tear down my religious beliefs. I started becoming disenfranchised with the "college scene" and struck out to make my own way.
In the Summer of '71 I got a job as an Inspector at Cleveland Chair Company (photo wanted of this company)
I went back to CSCC that fall and after a quarter and a half, I left and got a job as a "Service Writer" at
Hall Chevrolet at Five Points (photo wanted) and worked there for a couple of years.
I went back to CSCC for part of another quarter and then
I worked as
"Red Badge" Salesman form '74 to '75 at
the Sears Automotive Center at the Cleveland Mall (photo wanted)
and lived at the
Marquis Apartments (photo wanted)

In '75 I left Sears to open my own business, Tape City, in Athens TN
But, Cleveland kept calling
me home and in '78 I opened a 2nd Tape City in Keith Street Plaza
