Do you remember a man who I think was named "Hoppy Lawson"? I seem to recall he sat out in front of the post office and sold pencils. This was around the early 70s,
thx
Shirlene

...I lived there from birth until I was 20 and still have family and friends there that I come to see on a regular basis. I live in Atlanta now. I miss Cleveland. I miss the quiet spirit of a small town.
I love your site. I've been coming to it for years. It's on my favorites list and I love to check from time to time to see the changes and updates. I love your tribute to Dr. Shock and Dingbat. Wow, I would love to own some copies of those two during Shock Theatre, I'm always telling my kids how hilarious they were. Do you know which years they were on?
Did you ever hear from anyone on whatever happened to Bones? I think I saw him last in 1984 because I was working at Kreseges and he would wander through the Village Mall. (My older brother tells me about the times when the Village Mall was the saturday night cruise site....things haven't change in that kids in high school are still trying to find a way to hang out on Friday in an afordable way :) )
I would love to see some photos of "old Bradley High school". I will check when i'm in cleveland at the library. Do you know if anyone has written a history book about Cleveland?
Thanks a bunch for giving us such a wonderful web site to go and remember the good times

Shirlene ,
I think the guy who sold pencils was named Jesse Shaw. He had dirty red hair, was deformed and had a little wagon.
Bones died....I'm trying to get his real name.
Once. someone told Bones to hide in a dressing room of a dress shop? on the Keith Street side of the Village. He didn't come out until they had locked-up and left. We drove by and he was waving to us from inside about midnight. It was sooo funny then, but I guess it was mean. I can't remember the guys who would ride him around.
Thanks for helping me remember those.
Phil

Atkins Restaurant and Court was in Sweetwater, Tennessee instead of Cleveland.

It is now the Pawn Shop located between Napa Auto Parts and Fred's.

Hello,
This photo is of the Pinion Jewelry Company approx. 1955.
The store was located on the first floor of the Cherokee Hotel. You can see the hotel marquee on the right side of the photo.
John Hill Pinion owned and operated the store. Not sure what years but if I find out, will let you know.
I am searching for any information you may have about this family or this store.
John Hill Pinion was my husband's grandfather. His only daughter, Betty Lynn Pinion, married James Clifton Stone of Birmingham, Alabama in 1954. Based on some of the other photos we've uncovered, I believe Betty was probably a debutante in her day. There are oil paintings of her and her father John Hill Pinion which must have been very expensive. Also, she enjoyed a very elaborate wedding. Those photos can be seen at www.nixfamilytree.blogspot.com , please list a link back to the website if you borrow them for posting.
Would appreciate an e-mail link angie@beckville.com  if you post the Pinion Jewelry Company photos. I am hoping someone may see them and contact me with additional details or memories. We have very little family history available on the Pinion side.
The photo of the gentlemen at the counter is inside the store. John Hill Pinion is on the right. Not sure who the other men are.
Thanks for posting Cleveland, Tennessee postcards and pictures. You just can't put a price on our past!
Angie

Here is a photo of the Craigmile......later Hardwick home. My great grandfather, William Schenck, posed with his crew when it neared completion. He also had a hand in building the Broad Street Methodist Church. He came to Cleveland about 1880 from Springfield, OH. He also built churches and large homes there.

Hi Phil,
My great grandfather is on the far right standing on the porch. I'm sure of this because I have some portrait photos of him.
My grandmother told me years ago that he worked on some of the buildings at Bob Jones, and many other "high-end" homes in Cleveland.
Sorry, I don't have any other building photos.
regards,
tom robinson

Hello Mr. Lea. I "stumbled" across your site by total accident at Google. I typed in a search for Star Vue Drive In Cleveland, Tn. and among the sites I found yours and I'm glad I did. My name is Neil Allen and am a retired teacher. I was born, raised and worked in Cleveland. My father, Carl L. Allen owned and operated Allen's Garage on South Lee Highway.

Your uncle Danny knew my father and I have gotten acquainted with Danny, at the Cleveland Cruise In's. I was raised in the "car world" and am a car nut also. Would you be interested in a photo of Allen's Garage, circa 1950's to post on this site?

I really enjoy your site.
