Built in 1861 by Thomas
H. Calloway and purchased that year by Julius Raht.
Raht used it for his home and the office of Ducktown
Copper Company.
He was president of the Cleveland National Bank from
1877 until his death in 1879.
The property reportedly contained 2,000 acres.
It has also been claimed that the house had an
underground passage/tunnel from the basement to the
depot, but that claim is disputed.
W. P. Lang lived there,
circa 1907-1915. Lang helped form the Cleveland Band &
Trust in 1906 and was the 1st president of the Cleveland
Rotary Club in 1924.

Sir,
I was looking at your site and found the name of my grandfathers old
business in the Cherokee Hotel building. Capitol Sales was a company he
started that did business with the many appliance manufacturers in the
Cleveland, Athens and Chattanooga area. He ( E.L.Ellison ) was a parts
sales representative in the appliance industry. He represented stove
part manufacturers who supplied companies such as Magic Chef, Hardwick
and Brown Stove as well as Athens Stove Company.
The parts varied between burners, timers, controls, Racks and especially
handles.
The office originally occupied a room in the Cherokee but moved into the
storefront next to Pinion Jewelers in the 1960's. The office was used by
My grandad weekly and as a display of the parts and companies
represented. He lived in Nashville but made the trip weekly through the
60',70's and 80's until he retired. We stayed with him occasionally
during summer break when we'd tag along with he and my grandmother. I
remember staying in the old Cherokee when there was a coffee shop around
the corner and the old movie theatre was still open. We started staying
at the old Holiday Inn next to the Burger Chef in the early 70's .
I have fond memories of this town from my childhood, If I can find a
good photo of the storefront, I'll email it to you.

The Church of God Motorcycle Corps is also
called the Highway Good Samaritans and
Joel's Horsemen. It is made up of those who ride motorcycles as a means
of the fulfillment of
prophecy that points to the return of Jesus Christ and as a means of
sharing the gospel with the
public in the streets and lanes of the cities and in the highways and
hedges (Luke 14:16-24).
The motorcycle was first used in the church in 1958 when former Chief
Bishop Grady R.
Kent identified it as a fulfillment of the prophecy of Joel 2:4: "The
appearance of them is as the
appearance of horses…like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth
the stubble.'' The historical
fulfillment of this prophecy was Cyrus, who liberated Judah from
Babylonian captivity. The spiritual
fulfillment is the church, God's spiritual army. Because of this
prophecy the church has used
motorcycles to attract the attention of the public to a gospel witness
and the identification of the
fulfillment of prophecy that predicts the soon coming of Jesus.

On March 31, 1933,
President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed legislation to create the
Civilian Conservation Corps, the first of the New Deal agencies. The CCC
employed young men and gave them an opportunity to develop new skills
and prepare them for future employment as the nation recovered from the
Great Depression.
Originally established as the "Emergency Conservation Work Program," the
CCC was renamed in 1937. Although there are no official records,
estimates of the number of young men who participated in the nine-year
program reach approximately three million. Congress extended the program
to include African Americans, Native Americans, and World War I
veterans. Enrollees performed a variety of conservation activities
including reforestation, soil conservation, road construction, flood and
fire control, and agricultural management. The CCC also completed a
number of tasks associated with the development and construction of
state and national parks. The CCC provided food, clothing, and shelter,
as well as education, vocational training, and health care. The
Department of Labor, the War Department, and the Department of Interior
administered the CCC; state and local labor offices assisted with
selection and enrollment procedures.
The CCC's Fourth Corps
area, District C, included Tennessee plus western North Carolina,
northern Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. Organized on April 25, 1933,
District C fielded forty companies, including three "Veteran White," one
"Veteran Colored," two "Junior Colored," and thirty-four "Junior White"
camps. Tennessee supported fifteen branch offices located in
Cleveland, Dyersburg, Murfreesboro, McMinnville, Shelbyville,
Clarksville, Springfield, LaFollette, Maryville, Loudon, Rockwood,
Morristown, Elizabethton, Kingsport, and Bristol.

The Cleveland Masonic Female Institute
opened its doors to pupils in 1856 under the direction of Professor H.W.
Von Adelhoff. The school was forced to close in 1861 during Federal
occupation of the city. It is believed the building served as a hospital
or military headquarters during the War. After extensive repairs, the
school reopened in December 1864, right after the war’s end. In 1915,
the building became HOUSTON APARTMENTS, as it remains to this day.

Father of Nina Craigmiles, builder of St. Luke Episcopal Church.
1890 co-founder of Cleveland Woolen Mills along with C. L. Hardwick,
John Parker, P.B. Mayfield and Creed Bates. The motto was: “From the
sheep’s back to the clothing rack.” (It later became Hardwick's and is
now America’s oldest tailor-made clothing maker.)

John Henderson
Craigmiles came to Cleveland from Georgia around 1850. He and his
brother, Pleasant, operated a successful mercantile business but John
soon grew restless with small town life and traveled west to the
California gold fields. He soon discovered that prospecting held little
appeal for him, but out west, he did make a discovery that would both
change his life and create his fortune. He realized the travel and
supply needs of the western territory and soon discovered that a large
amount of money could be made in the shipping business. He managed to
purchase a small fleet of six ships and began a shipping line between
California and Panama. Not only could he trade back and forth between
Central America and the West Coast, but he could also carry passengers
from the eastern United States who booked passage to Panama and then on
to California.
The shipping business prospered for some time, then disaster struck.
Mutinous crews hijacked five of John’s ships at sea and made off with
the vessels and cargo. Claims from his creditors soon wiped out his
fortune, but Craigmiles refused to give up. He borrowed $600 from his
brother, Green, and set out to rebuild his business with the one ship
that he had left. By 1857, he returned in Tennessee, once again a very
wealthy man.
Soon after his return, John began courting a young woman named Adelia
Thompson, the daughter of local doctor, Gideon Blackburn Thompson, and
on December 18, 1860, they were married.
A few months after the wedding, the Civil War began. The Secretary of
State for the Confederacy, Judah P. Benjamin, recognized John’s head for
business and appointed him the chief commissary agent for the South. He
held this position throughout the entire war and reportedly used it to
great advantage. Buying cattle and speculating in cotton, he sold goods
to the Confederacy at a profit and made a fortune from the war. He was
also wise enough to know that paper money was of little value and only
traded in gold. After the defeat of the Confederacy, when the paper
money printed in Richmond turned out to be worthless, John was not
ruined as many other southern businessmen were.
He died in 1899 from blood poisoning.

This Italian villa-style home was built for P.M. Craigmiles in 1866 and
is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Johnston
family donated the home to the city of Cleveland for a public library in

In 1866, business leader P. M. Craigmiles announced the beginning of
post-Civil War recovery in Cleveland with the construction of this
impressive Italianate-styled brick home. The Local History Collection
of the Cleveland Public Library contains significant records about the
Civil War and Reconstruction years in Bradley County.
