CONNIE DAY

Connie Day was a lifelong resident of Cleveland, Tennessee. She was a four-time champion and a three-time runner-up in the Tennessee Women’s Amateur Championship. In 1993 Connie claimed the State Senior Amateur Championship. She was recognized as one of the top female amateurs in the country by Golf Digest in 1966, and appeared on the cover of Golf World Magazine in April 1967. She was exempt from qualifying for the U.S. Women’s Open for two years, and was an alternate on the Curtis Cup team in 1966 and 1970. Connie is remembered for her great golfing ability, her integrity in the business world, and her friendship.
Connie passed away on August 30, 2002.

HISTORY:
Founder: S.B. Rymer Sr. (1879-1959)
Period of Production: 1916-1960s

TIMELINE:
1916 - S.B. Rymer Sr. returns from Oklahoma to his home state of Tennessee, and establishes Dixie Foundry Co.
1920s - Dixie produces wood and coal-fired, and, later, gas-fired ranges.
1937 - Workers strike Dixie and 3 other local foundries, demanding increased minimum wages of 32 to 35 cents/hour
1952 - Company begins producing electric ranges.
1957 - Acquired Victor Products
1958 - Dixie acquires Magic Chef of St. Louis, MO.
1960 - Name changed from Dixie Foundry to Magic Chef.
1964 - Rymer family gives up total controlling interest and issues IPO to raise capital for the company.
1980s - Company merged with other firms to form Maytag Cleveland Cooking Products.


S. B. Rymer Sr. was a native of Polk County. In 1916 he established Dixie Foundry Company. It initially produced cast-iron hollowware used for corn stick molds, fireplace grates and frames, sugar pots, and teapots. In 1921 the company began to make coal and wood ranges for the kitchen; thereafter, ranges of different sorts have been the company's main items. In 1924 production expanded to coal and wood heaters. Gas ranges came off the company's lines in 1928, and in 1952 Dixie Foundry produced its first electric ranges.

In 1958 Dixie Foundry acquired Magic Chef, which had been a St. Louis-based manufacturer of gas ranges and an industry leader since the 1930s. Two years later, company officials decided to capitalize on the consumer name recognition of "Magic Chef." They changed the company's name from Dixie Foundry to Magic Chef. Within a year the company had reasserted its leadership in the national market for gas and electric ranges, and by 1969 the corporation had achieved 11 percent of the market share in the United States.

Rex Dockery #44
REX DOCKERY
1942 - 1983

Rex was a 1960 graduate of Bradley Central High School in Cleveland, Tennessee. He played several sports and was an all-state guard on the football team. He went on to receive a degree from the University of Tennessee where he played four years of football for the Vols.

Coaching career:
Dockery got his coaching start as a graduate assistant at Tennessee. He then coached football at Harriman High School the 1966 and 1967 seasons. The following year, he took the head coaching job at Morristown East High School and led the team to a state championship in 1969.

Tennessee:
Moving to the college ranks, he became an assistant under Bill Battle at Tennessee. During his time there, he coached Phil Fulmer and was responsible for recruiting the SEC's first black quarterback, Condredge Holloway.

Georgia Tech:
In 1972, Dockery became the offensive line coach at Georgia Tech, where he was reunited with his high school teammate Steve Sloan.

Vanderbilt:
Rex followed Steve to Vanderbilt in 1973.

Texas Tech:
When Sloan went on to Texas Tech two years later, Dockery went with him as offensive coordinator. When Steve Sloan left Texas Tech for Ole Miss in 1978, Dockery became the team's head coach. He coached at Texas Tech from 1978 to 1980, compiling a 15–16–2 record, and being named the Southwest Conference Coach of the Year in 1978.

Memphis State:
Dockery served as the head football coach for the Memphis Tigers from 1981 to 1983. He had an 8–24–1 record at Memphis State (now University of Memphis), starting his tenure with back-to-back 1–10 seasons and going 6–4-1 in his final season.

Death:
Dockery was killed in a plane crash on December 12, 1983, in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, en route to an appearance before the Quarterback Club there. Also killed in the crash were Memphis State freshman Charles Greenhill, offensive coordinator Chris Faros, and booster Glenn Jones.

Honors:
In December 1983, the playing surface at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium was named Rex Dockery Field. Bradley High School also presents "The Rex Dockery Award" in his memory.
