REVEREND BILLY GRAHAM
In 1936 Billy Graham, as a freshman at Bob
Jones University, worked at the nearby Parks-Belk department store on
the corner of Central Avenue and North Ocoee Street in downtown
Cleveland, Tenn. Young Billy was waiting on a customer, who wanted a
particular shoe. Unable to find the proper size, Billy tried to talk the
woman out of buying the shoes, but she insisted on buying an ill-fitting
pair and wobbled out of the store.
The legendary tale has been repeated often in these parts of Tennessee.
“He wasn’t good at selling soles, but he was good at winning souls,”
said Virginia (Gigi) Graham, Billy’s oldest daughter. |

The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR)
was the major Federal veterans organization; the organization erected
few monuments in the South. This GAR memorial, erected at the Fort Hill
Cemetery’s entrance in 1914, is one of only three in Tennessee. Because
of Fort Hill’s commanding views overlooking downtown, the railroad and
adjacent turnpikes, federal troops occupied the cemetery during the
Civil War. Fort Hill also contains a burial section of 270 unknown
Confederate soldiers as well as the individual graves of such notable
local citizens as Civil War diarist Myra Inman Carter, Colonel Spencer
Boyd and Judge Levi Trewhitt, who played significant roles in the
county’s Civil War and Reconstruction history. |
