GEORGE RADFORD HATCHER(aka: G R Hatcher) In 1885 G. R. Hatcher was proprietor of the Hatcher House Hotel

G. R. HATCHER, proprietor of the Hatcher House, the leading hotel of Cleveland, was born in North Carolina, July 1, 1834. At the age of sixteen he began slave trading, carrying them from Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee, to New Orleans. He continued them until the emancipation. He amassed an extensive fortune which he afterward lost. He came to Polk County, in 1838, and died in 1865, at the age of sixty-six. He was reared on a farm, and received a good education. In 1862 he entered the Confederate Army, of the Fourth Georgia Cavalry, and remained in active service until the close of the war and when mustered out of the service, settled in Cleveland, going into the produce business with Andy McClary, and later forming a partnership with Jack Crow. Succeeding in the produce business the deceased established a general merchandise business in partnership with Joe Calloway, occupying a building on the public square known as “The Ark” which was a landmark of the town for decades.In 1865 he came to Cleveland penniless, but, receiving $400 from a friend, he began merchandising. For several years he had a flourishing trade. In 1870 he embarked in the hotel business. The house was small, but by judicious management, he was, in 1883, able to build the house he now occupies, on the old stand. It contains thirty-one rooms, is commodious and pleasant, and receives an extensive patronage. Mr. Hatcher has become well known to the traveling public, to whom he is always attentive and courteous. He is a Mason and a Democrat. In 1861 he married Martha VEST, of Polk County, who bore him one son. After her death he wedded Elizabeth WILLIAMS of New York. To this union two sons and two daughters have been born. Mr. and Mrs. HATCHER are active members of the Missionary Baptist Church.

Formerly known as the Cleveland Masonic Female Institute, which opened its doors to pupils in 1856 under the direction of Professor H.W. Von Adelhoff. The school was forced to close in 1861 during Federal occupation of the city. It is believed the building served as a hospital or military headquarters during the War. After extensive repairs, the school reopened in December 1864, right after the war’s end. In 1915, the building was made into apartments, as it remains to this day.

At the airstrip across from the Penn Drive-In Theater south of Trion Ga, "Bud" Thompson, local flying enthusiast, was encouraged by friends from Cleveland, Tennessee: Maurice Inglis, F. Humphrey, and J. Humphrey. Thompson bailed out at 2,500 feet and fell 1,000 feet before billowing out his parachute. He made two jumps.

Hunt's Trailer Park on Benton Pike was ravaged by an "F3" tornado on 04/15/1965.
Approximately 50 people were injured, one perished and more than 100 were left homeless.
It traveled North along Dry Valley Rd. for 10.4 miles.
