I do Websites, so I have the unique opportunity to take advantage of my 1st Amendment Rights
and say "REBATES SUCK".
I think companies use them to tempt us, realizing that many of us will not take advantage of them.
Many of us find the process too confusing and/or many of us are lazy.
Some complaints from me! (more to come)
My RiteAid.com Rebate Complaint:
My mom and I took a drive up to New England to
see the leaves back in October 2004.
On 10/17/04 we stopped in a Rite Aid to buy some film and they had Kodak film with a
REBATE.
The salesgirl gave me a booklet saying I could apply online.
When I got home, I did just that. But, when I would check the status I kept
getting something like: "Awaiting confirmation from the store."
I checked for several days, but kept getting the same results. So, I sent an email to RiteAid.com,
but still no rebate check.
Today, 11-15-2004 I checked and now the website says "The following
receipt(s) do not match any of our records."!?!?!?!?!?
Below is copy of an email I sent to riteaid.com:

Dear Sirs,
I've called your "888" number twice today only to be disconnected TWICE after "jumping through your hoops" (ex: "press 2 if you have nothing better to do"), holding, etc.......
NOW, your site tells me: "The following receipt(s) do not match any of our records.

Dell Computer Rebate:
I purchased a Dell computer online in November 2003 and did
not get any rebate coupons with it.
I emailed Dell and only received some "auto responses". I waited
and waited for a "real person" to reply and they never did. After
the 30 day limit ran out, I emailed Dell and asked them to refund my money.
(I figured shipping would cost me less than the $100.) At this date,
04-05-2004, I still have not received any rebate coupon, nor have I even
opened my boxes. I'm out $829 for nothing. I sent them 2 more emails today
via their website. Let's see what happens.
Update: I called Dell and they sent me a $100 check. (Still, it was a lot of trouble!)
TAX RIP-OFF on rebates:
A BIG reason I hate rebates is the tax-rip-off! My dad purchased a new Ford Ranger in 2003. It "listed" for around $20,000, but with cash-back / rebates he only paid about $15,000. Guess what? He had to pay sales tax on the FULL $20,000. I call my local TN state Rep., Bob McKee to complain. He acted surprised that such a policy existed and promised to call me back when he found out something. [Have I heard back from him? Noooooooooo!]
