I did a search for the lyrics of "Honey are you mad at your man" and the #1 hit on google was:

when I clicked on tha link, my Charter Anti-Virus popped up and said I had a "trojan". 
BUT, it was unable to remove it so the damned lyrics.duble.com has placed a permanent virus on my computer. May they burn in hell!

And then, I got one of those damned "Would you like to set your Home Page to "http://searchco.com"? windows.
I don't trust clicking on any of these things sent by bastards, so I hit Ctrl/Alt/Delete and lost that IE window.

Tonight I wanted to send a cryptogram to a friend, so I did a search for "send a cryptogram" and below was the #1 hit. When I clicked on it I was bombarded with popups. I couldn't close them out fast enough. (I'm sure we've all seen the drill.) So, I did a quick CTRL/ALT/DEL to reboot. As I type I'm doing burning a backup CD of my files in case my system was corrupted. It's sad when you can't even look up something simple without this crap. May pop-up sender all burn in hell with Osama!

Did it help? ............. HELL NO!

When I clicked on it immediately got a ton of pop-ups! 
I simply turned off my computer. (I don't know if I've been infected again or not.)

To determine how to remove this (Virus?, Trojan?, Hijacker? / pop-up?) from my computer 
(and/or throttle the person or persons responsible for putting it on there). lol

Description of problem: 
I have Windows ME and often when I open IE, Internet Explorer, I will get this popup.

My homepage is yahoo.com
Oftentimes when it opens there will be a "Search" table? on the left side of the page that I have to "X" to close. It it odd looking as it has something like a "BB" looking logo. (The 1st "B" is Backwards, I think.)
I'll click on "Email" and if I'm asked for my password I often get this pop-up about the time I enter it.
(I don't know if it's timed or opens after X-number of links I click on or what.)

Today's, 03-07-2004, example that caused me to create this website: 

01a. I opened IE and www.yahoo.com loaded, but there was a Search table? on the left side
       of the page.  (It's odd looking with a "BB" looking logo. (The 1st "B" is Backwards, I think.)
01b.  I X'd / closed out that search table.
02. I clicked the Mail link.
03. My Inbox opened.
04. I clicked on the top unread email.
05. It was SPAM, so I clicked the yahoo SPAM button.
06. Then...... I saw the dreaded hourglass and knew what was coming.
07. This SEARCH page came up and, typically, there is no "X" button to cancel it out.
      (The toolbar and EVERYTHING is covered!) So.......
08. I hit Ctrl, Alt, Delete, 
      a. I get a little window saying something like "Window is not finished loading", so I close it out.
      b. the CLOSE PROGRAM window then opens & at the top is: 
      " http://www.searchxl.com/dir.php - Microsoft Internet Explorer "

09. I hit ENTER and a little button in the middle of the screen pops up saying something like:
    "This page has not finished loading" with an "OK" button in it.  [I do NOT hit the OK button there!]
10. I Ctrl, Alt, Delete & ENTER again and then I always get another window that says: 
    "This program is not responding".

11. I hit ENTER and the evil popup [as well as all my open IE windows] disappear.
12. I'll have no more of these popups until some random? time I'll open an IE window
      after having closed all IE windows.

I have Norton Anti Virus 2003, which is no help. (They want me to buy 2004!)

Related? oddity: My "Tab" key often sends me to another window instead of working properly!?!?!?

I think this may have started after I did a prompted Microsoft update!?!?!?

Does anyone have any ideas?

I've tried to following to rid myself of this crap (not necessarily in this order):

01. Restored my computer back to Feb 01, 2004. (popup was still there, plus Norton AntiVirus won't work.
02. Performed a "search" in C-drive for "searchxl" in TEXT. (Not found.)
03. Performed a "search" in C-drive for "IE.REG" in TEXT. (Not found, except for my references.)
04. Performed a "search" in C-drive for "search.reg" file. (Not found.)
05. I followed kephyr.com's instructions, see below: (Results: No "SystemSearch" found in registry editor.)

06. I performed a SEARCH in C- drive for "SystemSearch"........ Nothing!
07. I attempted to Open Windows Explorer to "delete ie.reg", but only "My Documents" opens!?!?!?
08. I did a "search" in C-drive for "topsearcher" in TEXT and got 4 hits:
    a. system.rsc in C:\Windows  
    b. "user.rsc" at C:\Windows 
    c. "index" at C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\UserData
    d. "custom" at index at C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof
09. I opened that with "Notepad", did a "Find" and came up with:

Today, 03-20-2004 when I CTRL/ALT/DEL 'd the popup, 
http://www.topsearcher.com/dir.php 
was there instead of searchxl.com/dir.php!?!?!? (I guess they're the same bunch of pirates!)

I went to topsearcher.com and it also has a "Reset your Search page back to MSN Click Here" link. 
I clicked on it to see what it says. 
I got the following "File Download" window that says:

 So, I didn't go further. 

I've looked at download.com for spyware removal, but it appears there's a trade-off as the tools put junk on your computer as well.

Any suggestions out there ????????????

03-25-2004 UPDATE:

I found an spp.reg file by START, RUN, regedit. I right clicked on it, Edit and saved this text version below.

It looks like it may be the culprit. I don't know what I did, but now I get the following error message when I boot-up:

I was on www.roughstock.com/cowpie and each time I looked for a song I would get a 

Security Warning from Gain Publishing
popups I had to close out.

Each time I looked up a song, I had to click NO. 
Finally one of them got me. 
Now my system is corrupted again with this damn thing.

I can't even open an Explorer window without it changing and changing and changing.

I want to shoot these hacking, nerd motherf*ckers in the f*cking head!

I'm going to try to download Netscape and then remove Internet Explorer completely.

I downloaded Netscape 7.1 and now I'm getting the following popup on it:

08-31-2004 Here's a suggestion I got from a nice fellow via email.

1. When you get IE running properly 
     (which you will after ctrl+alt+del + re-opening etc..)
2. Go to Tools
3. Click Internet Options
4. Go to security
5. Click restricted sites
6. Add www.searchxl.com and all the other of the likes
7. Problem solved

Today I added it and http://www.roidr.com (we'll see if it works) (It did NOT for me.)

Date: 03-07-2004 Subject: searchxl pop-up Objective of this website: To ask how to remove this Virus? from my computer and/or throttle the person or persons responsible for putting it on there. Description of problem: Often when I open IE, Internet Explorer I will get this popup. My homepage is yahoo.com and this annoying pop up will typically only come up after I've clicked on another link. Today's Example that caused me to create this website: 01. I opened IE and www.yahoo.com loaded, but there was a Search table? on the left side of the page that I X'd / closed out. 02. I clicked the Mail link. 03. My Inbox opened. 04. I clicked on the top unread email. 05. It was SPAM, so I clicked the yahell (my name for 'em) SPAM button. 06. Then...... I saw the dreaded hourglass and knew what was coming. 07. This SEARCH page came up and, typically, there is not "X" buttons to cancel it out. The toolbar and EVERYTHING is covered! So....... 08. I hit Ctrl, Alt, Delete, the CLOSE PROGRAM window opens & http://www.searchxl.com/dir.php is at the top. 09. I hit ENTER and a little button in the middle of the screen pops up saying something like: "This page has not finished loading" with an "OK" button in it. [I do NOT hit the OK button there!] 10. I Ctrl, Alt, Delete & ENTER again and then I always get another window that says something like: "This program is still running..." (or something like that) window. 11. I hit ENTER and the evil popup as well as all my open IE windows disappear. 12. I'll have no more of these popups until some random? time I'll open and IE window after having closed all IE windows. I have Norton Anti Virus 2003 with sucks and is no help. (They want me to buy 2004!) I think this started after I did a Microsoft update!?!?!? Does anyone have any ideas?
