CAN A SWEAT BEE STING YOU IF YOU HOLD YOUR BREATH?!?!?
Ever been stung by a sweat bee? (Hurts doesn't it?)
Typically you don't know one is on you until you mash him inside your knee or the bend of your arm and it'll make you say.......
|
OUCH !!! |
|
Wanna know how I keep a sweat bee from stinging me?
(When I was young my daddy, Edward Lea, told me and it works for me!)
I TAKE A DEEP BREATH, HOLD IT & MASH THE SWEATBEE ON ME!
(Would you believe I've searched the entire world wide web and
have not seen
a site on how to keep a sweat bee from stinging you????)
It's simple, but
puzzling.
Why does holding your
breath keep a sweatbee from stinging you?
I've told my friends about it, but no one else has ever heard of it.
So, now I'm telling the world.
How does it work, you ask?
Some believe holding your
breath closes up your pores just enough
to prevent a sweat bee's tiny stinger from penetrating your skin.
I don't know the scientific explanation, but I know IT WORKS FOR ME!

An example of how I stop a sweat bee from stinging me.
|
1. I see a sweat bee on my arm.
|
2. I take a DEEP breath and ........ HOLD IT.
|
3. I mash the evil sweat bee.
|
4. I flick the sweat bee off my arm (BEFORE I take a breath).
|
5. I exhale (AFTER I flick the dead little bugger off me).
|
6. I smile as I'm glad that I wasn't stung (and I think of my dad). |
NOTE: I have learned #4 the hard way:
I have killed one on my arm, breathed before I knocked him off and... IT
STILL STUNG ME!?!?!?!
I would like to hear from an expert who knows. (And, how can they can sting you after they're dead!?!?!?)
UPDATE:
I was at a pool party recently and a sweatbee lit on one of my friends. I told them about my theory and they scoffed (until they tried it). She took a breath and mashed the little bugger with no pain.
The sweatbees were bad there and I killed about 6 on me. On the first 3 I took a deep breath, held it and mashed them with no pain. The 4th one lit on my knee and I just took a shallow breath. I felt a little sensation with that one. (Still it didn't really hurt.) On the last two, I took deep breaths again and there was no pain.
There are several more believers after the pool party.
Have you tried it yet? (Maybe you'll be the next convert.)

In response to your website post on holding your breath prevents
bee stings…
I’m 36 years old when I was young my father told me that holding your breath
will prevent stings from any bee or similar insect. He learned this from his
grandfather who was a bee keeper. Since then I frequently catch bees in my hand
as a party trick and I’ve never been stung. I also fell into 2 wasp nests when I
was a kid and I immediately held my breath and walked away from both incidents
without a single sting, where in one a friend of mine that was only a foot away
received over 50 stings and had to go to the hospital!
Here’s another interesting spin-off … if you hold your breath the instant a
mosquito bites you and is drawing blood, it will not be able to pull out it’s
stringer and pops!
I think holding your breath is one of the most hidden secrets of all time…
whether it’s because your pores close or another reason, I know for a fact that
it works.

Hi. I was also surprised to find such little mention on the "hold your
breath to stop the bee stinging" idea. My grandfather used to do this
with bees, wasps, whatever. I remember watching him pick up a wasp that
had gotten into the car and hold it between his fingers - the bugger was
trying everything it could to sting him, but no such luck.
I tried to rouse some interest in this on the MythBusters forum (where
you can suggest possible topics for the show), but I haven't seen any
interest. I guess nobody on the show is willing to take the chance -
must be a bunch of pansies!

I was discussing weekend plans with a co-worker today and he said he was not looking forward to removing a wasp nest in his yard. I laughed and told him he probably wouldn't believe me but if he held his breath they couldn't sting him. He looked at me like I was insane. I proceeded to explain about how I came to know about this trick. When I was a kid, a friend of my uncle's was a professor and he had told my brothers about it. Of course my brothers had to try it and learned it was true. I personally witnessed them holding wasps and other stinging insects on many occasions but never was brave enough to try it myself (still not going to voluntarily, but know what to do in an emergency!). I even told the guy not to try it if he had been swimming because it softens the skin too much and then the insect doesn't need an open pore to sting (I would also be careful about doing this if I was too sweaty). He still didn't believe me so I decided to see if I could find any information about it on the web. I found your site and after reading through part of it, I was sure I was going to tell my brother about it. Lo and behold, as I read further into the emails there was one from my brother! Too funny! Guess I don't have to tell him about it now!
Thanks for your website that substantiates the stories we've been sharing for years!

Hello,
I just wanted to testify to what you are stating about the sweat bee's. I have found this to be true for any flying stinging insect. My grandfather used to reach up and grab a wasps nest, and roll it in his hands to kill the wasps, all while holding his breath, and come out with out one single sting. Another thing that he would do is what is called hive robbing, where he would roll the bees out of a hive, and bring back the hive of honey without a bee, or a sting.
I have personally tried the hold my breath, and squash individual wasps in my hands without getting stung, but not had the courage to try a nest yet, and don't plan to push my luck anytime soon, even though I have seen it done, and believe it works.
I don't care if there is no explanation as long as it works. Now my basic instinct is to hold my breath when a wasp is around, without fear.

Maybe, if it is at all true, they do not get the CO2 (carbon dioxide from
your exhaled breath which, at least in honeybees, is a further stimulus to
sting.

Not a chance, Phil.
It’s all in your mind.
Holding your breath does not close your pores or do anything else that a bee could detect.

Would you like to make a wager on your "it's all in your mind" statement,
Malissa?
I'll put up $10,000 CASH that holding my breath will prevent a sweatbee from stinging me
and/or prevent me from feeling a sweatbee sting me.
Now, just how confident in YOUR statement are you? Hmmmmm?

Well,
I have tried everything else so I might as well try this one. I am allergic to every type of bee, including the sweat bee. Guess I will try holding my breath this evening, see if it works. I go for bee sting shots, but will have to stop them, because my body is starting to break down from all the stings and the shots. I get about 100 stings a year.
You see, I also attract bees. Anyone else out there attracting bees? I believe it is because the salt and acidity in my system. Just found out I have Hypothyroidism. I must be throwing off the salt in my body in sweat.

I live in Tennessee. Do you have any idea how to get rid of the sweat bees? They absolutely love me!!!!!!!! I can't work on my yard without them stinging me. They usually sting me before I even notice they're on me. I just want them to go away. All the sites that I've seen so far doesn't tell me how to make them leave. Please help.
Desperate for relief,
Shaundra
NOTE: I suggested "Sevin Dust" to Shaundra and she replied:

Phil,
No, I don't have a pool. That would only make my bug issuse worse I believe. Yes, my yard is a new yard. I inherited this land when I was 1 yr old, but I've just recently built on it.
..... My biol professor wrote me back about the bees. She talked to an entomology expert and told me what to do. The sevin dust should work. I'm gonna try it.

Hello Phil,
My name is Randal Brown and I live in Lexington, Oklahoma. I wasn't sure if I would find anything about this on the internet, but if there was anyone else out there that actually
nknew about holding your breath and preventing wasp stings, this would be the place to look. I'm 43 years old, but I've known about this since I was a kid. A Professor at the Federal Aviation Administration, here in Oklahoma, told me about it. He said it would work with any kind of wasp, but would not work with bees. He told me that wasps have very flexible stingers and they cannot just stick it in anywhere to sting you. He said they have to find a pore in your skin in order to sting you. Like you said, when you hold your breath, all the pores in your body close and the wasp cannot sting you.
I have picked up many wasps since then, mostly just to prove to someone that I am not full of shit. I will wait for it to land on something, then I will pick it up and hold it with my fingers so that who ever is watching can see the wasps stinger trying to penetrate my skin to sting me. Once I've proven my point, I will throw the wasp down and stomp on it so that it will not come back after me.
My wasps of choice to pick up are Mud Dobbers and Yellow Jackets or Paper Wasps. I will not pick up anything bigger because they just look to mean and scary. {Ha, Ha)
I have also learned the hard way, do not try and pick up any wasps right after you have been swimming, because they will sting you anyway!!! Don't ask me how long to wait after swimming because I do not know. That's an experiment I'll let somebody else figure out. (LOL)
Nice talking to ya Phil,............................Randal

The reason why sweat bees continue to sting even into death is because they are tiny malicious agents of death. At least for people like me, who are deathly allergic to them. Did you know that they actually stopped making the antivenom about 12 years ago? Now there is no protection against them. I hate summer and its all because of the little bastards.
I like your web site, it made me happy to know that someone else thinks that sweatbees are evil.
Disclaimers: I do not claim that my method will work for
all.
(I just know that to hold my breath prevents sweat bees from stinging me.)
If you email me, I reserve the right to post in on this website.
